YIELD: 3 cups
1/2 cup green split peas
1/3 cup beef stock powder
1/4 cup pearl barley
1/2 cup red lentils
1/4 cup dried onion flakes
2 teaspoons dried Italian herbs
1/2 cup long-grain white rice
2 dried bay leaves
1/2 cup dried pasta i.e. macaroni (wrap in plastic)
1. Add each ingredient into a 4-cup-capacity jar to make a layered jar (or mix ingredients in a bowl and then pour into a jar).
2. Seal jar, label and store in the pantry until use.
How to Make Friendship Soup:
1 tablespoon olive oil
500g beef mince
170g tomato paste
1/4 cup red wine
400g diced tomatoes
3 litres water
1. Brown beef mince in a large oiled pan.
2. Add tomato paste and cook until sticky and sweet. Deglaze pan with a splash of red wine or stock. 
3. Add a tin of diced tomatoes, 3 litres of water and 3 cups of friendship soup mix to the pan. Mix well and bring to a boil then simmer (covered) for 45 minutes.
4. Add the pasta and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until pasta and barley is tender. Serve.
